Keeping the kids entertained during Half Term

Keeping the children happy and entertained doesn’t have to cost the earth, there are plenty of free or low-cost fun activities families can enjoy in the school holidays, including London. Here’s a run-down of our top 5 recommendations:

Marvel at Museums
Spark curiosity, provoke imagination and encourage questions with a trip to the museum. One of the top museums in the country is The National History Museum in London. We are fortunate in the UK that most museums and galleries are free to visit, the National History Museum included. Most famous for its dinosaur and fossil collections, you will also uncover the history of life on Earth, from the smallest insects to the largest mammals. We also recommend visiting the Horniman Museum and Gardens, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Science Museum, and The National Maritime Museum, all free entry.

See the Seaside
Who doesn’t love a day trip to the seaside?! Kids can spend hours on the beach exploring rock pools, crabbing, digging, building, and playing in the sand, not to mention splashing, swimming, and boogie boarding in the sea. A classic British lunch of fish and chips followed by a round of 99ers is a cheaper way to eat out, or if the weather is good, pack a picnic. South End on Sea has stunning parks and gardens, bring your four-legged friend and splash about in the waves along the seven miles of coastline, or get your adrenaline going in Adventure Island amusement park. Take a ride on the electric Railway in Brighton a discover a magical underwater world at Sea Life, there is so much to do at the seaside.

Play at the Park
The ultimate free adventure to get the kids moving. Let them explore the great outdoors, climb in the playgrounds, and why not bring a ball or a kite for some classic family entertainment. Some of our favourite parks include Hyde Park, where you can find the Serpentine Lido perfect for a swim as well as a sandpit, climbing frame and paddling pool or Greenwich Park which has iconic views, stunning gardens, wildlife, herb and rose gardens and a fab play area. Splash about in the fountains and let them lose in the playgrounds in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park or climb the wooden pirate ship or commandeer a tepee at Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Playground.

Love your Library
Free to join and often in beautiful historic buildings, expand your little one’s mind with a visit to the library. With a wide range of books, eBooks, music, film, computers, and other resources to enjoy at no cost. Many libraries also run Storytime sessions or reading challenge groups.

Take a Trip to the Farm
A day out to the farm is a childhood rite of passage, the trend of the community and urban farm is popping up all over the country, so accessible wherever you live!

Free to visit, enjoy seeing your children petting and feeding the animals, playing in the playground, and learning at the event sessions. You may also be able to purchase the organic fruits and vegetables grown on site and extend the enjoyment with cooking with the ingredients together at home.
We like Mudchute Farm and Park, London’s largest urban park or an outing to Deen City Farm and Riding Schools, where you will meet all the farm animals, enjoy the special petting area and there is also a café and a riding school with farm produce for sale. A fan of alpacas? Visit Vauxhall City Farm and meet the trio of famous alpacas, Tom, Jerry, and Ben. The farm also has an ecology area, herb and dye garden and a picnic area
