Fit Families

When you think about exercise as an adult you probably envision pounding a treadmill, lifting weights, or grooving in Zumba. For kids, exercise can look like football practice, riding their bike, zooming around soft play, and playing tag with friends. Children follow their parents’ example in many aspects, including fitness.

At PTC sports we have a programme of fun exercise sessions called Fit Families, incorporating circuit training, games, and aerobic fitness. Our Fit Families sessions enable you to enjoy keeping fit and healthy together with your children and can be modified for all ages.

Here are some ideas of how to extend exercising together as a family in addition to our classes:

  • Build movement into to everyday life, take the stairs instead of the lift, park the car further away, or better – leave the car and walk instead.
  • Take the dog for a walk, dogs need lots of exercise and bringing the children out on the twice daily walk will be an easy way of adding consistent exercise to your daily routine, and a great opportunity to talk and bond together away from daily distractions. Haven’t got a dog? Many rescue shelters look for volunteers to help with walking the dogs in their care.
  • Exercise doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated, simply taking a ball or frisbee to the park is enough to get everyone moving, kids love competition.
  • Kids and adults alike all enjoy a trampoline, trampoline parks have popped up across the country with family friendly and even toddler sessions, it’s a great and fun way to workout. If budget allows a trampoline in the garden is a great investment for hours of exercise joy.
  • Go for a run and take the kids with you on their bikes or scooters, trying to keep up with them will push you further. If your kids want to join you for a run why not download a free app like couch to 5k to help build their endurance. You could sign up to a parent and child run event or park run to help motivate them further.
  • If your child is old enough, bike or roller blade together, and pay a visit to your local skate park.
  • Swimming is a fantastic whole-body exercise and can be enjoyed by the whole family, whether you take a class with your child or visit a water park with flumes and rapids for an exhilarating family day out.
  • Venture to your local woods and forage to build a den, a clever way to get those steps in, spend time in nature and teach useful life skills.
  • For thrill loving families, book a day at a high ropes course. A fantastic way to build confidence and push yourself physically and mentally.
  • Build your core and leg muscles, strengthen your joints, and increase bone density with skiing or snowboarding at an indoor snow centre.
  • Work multiple muscle groups, increase stamina, and improve flexibility together with problem solving skills by hitting your local climbing wall.
  • Improve cardiovascular health, muscle strength, balance, and coordination with ice skating. For younger children most rinks offer training aids like ice walkers to help build their confidence and skills on the ice.
  • Laugh and challenge yourselves to climb, balance, jump and swing across different obstacle courses at your local adventure park.
  • Upgrade the family dance party to a family rave festival, a cool way to increase aerobic fitness while improving spatial awareness and overall balance, and not to mention fun.
